Listening to-- nothing
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. (No surprise there for those who know me, or rather, my predilection for 80s music.) 'Course, I love the band too. But then, the 80s had a lot of good bands, you can't deny that. Duran Duran, Starship, Journey, Survivor, Toto, the Eurythmics, Foreigner...and many more.
I think I first heard this song when I bought the cd, Billboard Top Hits: 1986 sometime in my teens. It was an instant hit with me, and I played it over and over, along with Burning Heart by Survivor. But the memory I have of it, that sticks with me the most, took place one night in bed, while I was waiting for Morpheus (the Greek god of sleep) to claim me.
I can't remember if this happened just before I moved to Poky to attend ISU, or while I was there going to school. (My memory isn't what it used to be before I started taking seizure medication. =0S) Anyhow, it was late at night, and I was feeling low and so alone. I was just entering that warm, fuzzy stage right before one succumbs to sleep when Kyrie came on the clock radio I had on my nightstand.
With the first uplifting, lilting notes of the song my moroseness began to dissipate. I felt better, no longer quite so alone. It was like an old friend, or a familiar, comfortable person had come visiting. My sadness was replaced with its opposite; new energy had infused me. By the song's end I also felt everything would be all right, that I could face new challenges come the morrow.
Interestingly enough--and I had no idea of this till I looked into the history of the song--Kyrie Eleison means "Lord have mercy"--or "Christ have mercy." *smiles a bit* It's a short prayer or supplication for God or Christ to be with one while one goes through life or a hard challenge. I definitely wasn't alone that night...

Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison, kyrieThe wind blows hard against this mountain side,
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide,
Setting my feet upon the roadMy heart is old, it holds my memories,
My body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine,
Is where I find myself againKyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the lightWhen I was young I thought of growing old,
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road,
Or only wished what I could beKyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the lightKyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
